Chinese Children Reunite with Families After Nike Shuts Down Operations

By Drew Valdez

-- As Nike announced it will be closing all U.S. stores in hopes to stop the spread of the coronavirus, millions of child laborers in China got the news that their hours would be reduced or even receive time off. What this means for the children: never-before-experienced family time.

Because sweatshops in China often implement both odd and lengthy hours, children had little time to spend with family before the pandemic occurred. We’ve learned that some children are taking the time off to catch up on sleep, while others will get the chance to acquaint themselves with their family members. One child we were able to speak with said, “I’m excited to finally meet my parents.”

Parents are equally excited about having their children back home as some have planned vacations. Although vacationing is currently impossible due to the welding shut of living barracks provided by the government, the consensus among parents is they will find a way out because memories are more important than potentially contracting the virus.
